Peace & Stability in Liberia
Liberia as a nation experienced one of its hardest struggles during the 14 year civil war (1989-2003) she experienced, but has since been a peaceful nation with 2024 marking 21 years of peace and stability. Since the Comprehensive peace agreement was brokered by ECOWAS in 2003 and the disarmament of over 100,000 combatants, Liberia as a country has experienced peace and democracy through the transitioning of several governments and heads of state.

Free and fair elections were conducted in 2005 with H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf emerging as the winner thus becoming the first female president of Liberia and Africa at large. She served for two terms (12 years) and successfully turned over power in the elections of 2018-the first peaceful transfer of power in 70 years, where H.E Dr. George Manneh Weah became president. President Weah served out his 6 year tenure and during the elections of 2023 lost to current president H.E. Joseph Nyumah Boakai and conceded victory.

President Boakai is currently serving out his tenure. With three successful turn overs in the absence of any international organization or outside influence, it’s safe to say that the people of Liberia are resolute about maintaining the peace and stability we now experience. In the post-conflict period, Liberia has never reverted into largescale conflict again, which by many accounts is a testament that we are determined to maintain the peace.

The bulk of this improvement occurred on the safety and security militarization domains, while the ongoing conflict domain had a slight deterioration. A fall in the likelihood of violent demonstrations was the primary driver of improved peacefulness in Liberia.
